This weekend's Wall Street Journal's Off Duty section did a great Interior Design piece on current, exciting, and ever-timeless nautical trends. Written by reporter David Sokol, I'll highlight it here and send you to it for a quick read and a little slide show of some interesting nautical interiors ….reminding you why you love coastal living ~ as if you need a reminder! Like the sea itself, the only thing constant about coastal style is its inconstancy. Maybe that's why it's so beloved a look ~ we who love the seaside count on it remaining. The sun comes up, the sun goes down, the beach is always there ~ the wind, the sound, the colors. Ever-changing, ever the same. Breathe in….breathe out…. you're home.
A few glimpses of the WSJournal piece:
"On Maryland's eastern shore, [designer] Skip Sroka paired blue-and-white geometric patterns with mahogany in pool and yacht projects, instead of the 'very soft, watery looks' he might have used in the past. 'Before, everyone wanted this serene beachy feel,' said the designer. 'Today it's about the playfulness and graphic quality of nautical themes'…. and never forget ~ a touch of knotty pine never hurt anyone!
Nautical motifs are 'traditionally traditional,' said Linda Eaton, curator of textiles at the Winterthur Museum... and the most buttoned-up traditional interior seems suddenly to wear a smile with a little flourish of seaside color.
'The current trend embraces traditional nautical elements and incorporates them into the home in unexpected ways,' said Vanessa Holden, creative director of West Elm, which recently introduced a rope-wrapped chandelier to its inventory. High-end retailers like Bergdorf Goodman transformed their summer windows into mini-seashores to stoke consumer interest in the trend... It seems everyone wants to take the seaside home ….even to midtown Manhattan!
Miami architect Luis Pons also noted that regionalisms diverge widely. For suites he designed at the Hotel Guanahani in St. Barts, colonial influences were appropriate. In the Northeast, Mr. Pons's coastal residences are more monochromatic, inspired by the region's faded cedar shingles and gray winter skies... even a wintery New England beach is beloved.
The eclectic classicist Steven Gambrel agrees that nautical's 'relaxing colors and textures found in nature' may account for its widespread appeal. For a large family residence in East Hampton, the designer wanted to "cool down the seriousness of the house" with tactile upholstery and bottle lamps. But he also suspended oversize chandeliers made of white-painted driftwood and mounted a huge papier-mâché anchor above the hearth. 'We're careful to avoid the obvious styling components,' he said of employing different scales… if there's a place where rules don't apply, it's the seaside. No effort is involved in making it your own ~ it always was!
Meanwhile, the decorator Ms. Hagan advised simply exhaling. "Nautical is all about the feeling of being on the water with a warm breeze. You can't help smiling." I couldn't have said that better myself! Close your eyes....you're there.
