First there's the ever-darling Elf on the Shelf! What's the story? Excellent listener and even better observer, The Elf on the Shelf is the eyes and ears of Santa Claus himself. Elf cannot be touched, lest he loses his magic! Elf sits on your shelf and watches what goes on in your home! Taking in all the day-to-day activities around the house, no good deed goes unnoticed; Elf take his job seriously. And could he be any cuter?! How else did you think Santa finds out who's naughty and who's nice? Now you know. Fabulous gift idea too, comes with precious story book. Don't forget now ~ be nice!
A bit more ethereal are Lynn Haney's collectible Santas. Each Christmas season, Texas folk artist Lynn Haney creates a seaside-themed Santa exclusively for RSH. The first Santa Texas Tech Art School grad! Lynn made was actually a soft-sculpture stitched and fabricated by hand in a long, bell-trimmed hat. With the encouragement of his wife, Lynn soon started another and others began to follow, with clay heads and more trim and accessories. And in 1987, the Lynn Haney Collection officially began. Soon Lynn had a production company making these special Santas and, as each is an artisan collector's item, each and every Santa is signed by Lynn Haney. Each year, our Santa collectors await a spectacular new Santa, detailed impeccably according to a usually seaside theme, especially --and exclusively -- for RSH followers with a most discerning eye for artful detail.
Click on RSH Catalog at right and search Elf, then search Santa... and get your traditions started ~ or continued ~ this year!

Have you ever noticed -- so much of success in life is attention to detail? Art think Dali, architecture think Michelangelo, cool cars think Raptor, design think my kitchen re-do! -- the big stuff in life. But the small stuff too -- the eyes on a beloved stuffed animal, color of the piping on a chair's upholstery think orange, the lining of a Chanel suit...
Take Nicky Kinnaird -- the devoted seeker of the world's most rarefied beauty products and make-ups. She grew up in Northern Ireland, but credits the three months a year her family spent at their vacation home near Valencia, Spain, and her exposure to "European pharmacy culture," for providing the spark of inspiration for her mini-empire. "It just wasn't like that back home in Belfast," she said. "In Spain, everyone would dress to the nines for their paseo along the seafront. They were beautifully groomed."*
Hmm, impeccably groomed, just for a walk along the boardwalk. Finery. Detail. wOw! Recall Easter Parade with Judy Garland ... that's real, and still going on today, right here in the USA, NYC, Fifth Avenue. Suburban lives aren't about such things these days, in the modern hustle-bustle of life, in most cities. Nevertheless, think about it -- detail indeed makes the difference. From the exterior of your home, to interior, what's on your table, the art in your life, right down to the clothes in your closet. Mom was always right: It pays ... to pay attention!
Cool crisp air is rising in Dallas, Texas! It's on its way across the nation, and has already visited much of the country… things are starting to turn indoors. Your gatherings around the fire or the fiery football game (Geaux Saints!), family and friends, nice.
Cozy your home with quilts, pillows, and warm autumn colors. See Pillows and Throws under Home Decor, and Thanksgiving under Seasonal. Click RSH Catalog at right.
While you're snuggling up to watch some good old Lifetime TV (who watches LT, anyway?), look around and start thinking about Holiday Decorating! You will think sOoOoO much better if there's a pot of my Mother's New Orleans Vegetable Soup on the stove. Trust me on that. Here it is:
2 pounds heavy beef brisket, large onion, 2 tsp salt, 2 ribs celery,1 potato, 3 qts water, 1 can tomatoes, cup chopped cabbage, 3 chopped carrots, diced turnip, 6 parsley sprigs minced. (ok to use frozen vegetables)
Prep: In soup pot, bring meat and water to boil, together with salt, 2 whole ribs celery, whole onion, and whole potato. Lower heat and cover for three hours or longer. Remove meat from pot, chopping to bite size and discarding bone and fat. Strain, reserving liquid. Mash the onion, potato, and celery through strainer. Return these ingredients and meat to liquid. Add vegetables. Add additional water as needed. Feeds 10 girls or 5 boys. Serve with crispy, crunchy French bread. Now, that's good! Thanks again, Mom!
Ode to Autumn… there's a chill in the air, life is gearing up for another round of holidays! Full speed ahead to another year gone. Where ~ where exactly ~ does the time go? Is it like the socks that disappear in the dryer? Always one; never two: mighty curious....
As peeps turn half a century (no one we know, rite), we realize we have only so much fun left, so many autumns too. Another cup of coffee, another work day, another evening out, a new friend, another month, another season, another year, a wedding, a baby on the way…another generation! Summer gone, beach farewell (except that it's endless summer in our hearts). Hello Fall, sweaters, football (it's Texas, after all), pumpkin patches, witches and candy, yummy turkey feast and loved ones... and then 'tis the season...!
Make it all count from now on. Celebrate each season…. decorate, commemorate, dedicate, observe. The trees are putting on a show, so is the air. There was an Earthquake in Dallas, Texas last night at 11:05pm!…. if that doesn't shake you into the next gear-shift, nothing will!
I'm not here to sell anything, just to point out a few lovely thoughts and things here and there along the way. Still, check out the RSH Catalog for some fun seasonal nods... and don't hesitate! ~ for life, it is a changin'. Back to the future: create the life you love!
