Console-ing Thoughts for Occasional Design and Decoration
What's a more agreeable furnishing than the very versatile console table? For lighting behind a sofa, for entryway welcome, for hallway lighting. Subltly divide a space, both visually and functionally, with a special console table. And newsflash ~ a console table is the perfect inconpicuous space for under-storage. Baskets, bowls ~ anything that might hold that ... thing ... you can't seem to find a place for ... to display, or to easily remember. Think keys, reading glasses, remote controls, cell phones.
But rather than clutter, a little effort here goes a long way. Use a console table for collections. Show off your interest in a certain ceramic artist, a favorite sculptor. A bold statement ~ a singular piece of art. An exquisite lamp that deserves the table to itself. Two sentry lamps for symmetry and balance. Think of color. Think of texture. And of course, don't overlook the possibiity of a console table as location for seasonal flowers and greenery. This will keep the console looking fresh and new ~ a changing of scenery and color.
Last but not least, don't overlook the wall behind the console! Use as a backdrop a striking, contrasting paint color to show off the table itself, a collection on the table, a spectacular lamp. Art work, either oversized or a collection of smaller elements carefully hung ... the look is limitless and will spotlight a favorite console table, as well as prized possessions.
Finally, consider a console table that is not in keeping with your overall design. If your room decor is mostly traditional, think about a contemporary or transitional console table. Or vice versa. A console table, being occasional and by nature never large or overwhelming, has the delightful capacity of adding a bit of daring fun and interest to a space ~ while being a workhorse of function and character.
Experiment! The look can always be quickly and easily changed and re-arranged.
